Abstract

Introduction: Falls in the elderly are frequent and concerning events, especially in long-term care institutions, with functional and emotional consequences. Objective: To assess fall frequency in institutionalized elderly and identify associated factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 60 institutionalized elderly individuals, evaluated through structured questionnaire, Mini-Mental State Examination, Berg Balance Scale, and Barthel Index. Results: Fall frequency was 46.7%, with female gender and low Berg Balance Scale scores as the main associated factors. Conclusion: The high prevalence of falls among institutionalized elderly is associated with impaired balance and highlights the importance of preventive strategies in geriatric institutions.
